No Easy Day Review + Giveaway

Book #3 out of my 35 books in 365 days goal is No Easy Day. This book was suggested to me by my sister and she let me borrow her copy. It took me awhile to read. I started it in early January and didn't finish it up until February. We moved in between that time, though so that probably had a lot to do with it. Anyway...

For the most part, I liked the book. I found it very interesting. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, it is one man's account of the mission that killed Osama bin Laden. Mark Owen (a pen name) wrote this firsthand account.

About the AuthorMark Owen a former member of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group, commonly known as SEAL Team Six. In his many years as a Navy SEAL, he has participated in hundreds of missions around the globe, including the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips in the Indian Ocean in 2009. Owen was a team leader on Operation Neptune Spear in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 1, 2011, which resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. Owen was one of the first men through the door on the third floor of the terrorist mastermind’s hideout, where he witnessed Bin Laden’s death. Mark Owen’s name and the names of the other SEALs mentioned in No Easy Day have been changed for their security.

At the end of the novel, he wrote about how the world wanted to know who was involved in the mission while most of the guys wanted to fade back into some semblance of a normal life. I can understand wanting to do that...but then THEN! He told a story of one of the men saying something along the lines of~ I just got home from killing Osama bin Laden. Can I have a beer before I start changing diapers again? That one line was enough to make me mad. Ha! The wives and families of these brave men are working and sacrificing in some capacity, too. It's a much different sacrifice, but one nonetheless. I just really believe in family first and because I've never been a service member, I don't know what it's like to put the military first or feel a strong allegiance to protecting members of a team that way. I guess what irked me was that the guy's wife likely never stopped working while he was away so yeah- man up, navy seal and change a poopy diaper. It's your turn. ;)

I'm kidding, mostly.

I enjoyed the book. I'd recommend it if you can handle the cockiness of the best of the best!

Stars: **** (4 out of 5)

And now for the good stuff! I've teamed up with fellow readers and coffee sippers to provide you with a celebration of Sarah's 4 Year Blogiversary! Without further ado, I present to you The Coffee and A Good Book Giveaway (winner obviously doesn't have to buy either of those with the Amazon card)

Say hello to Kristin and a Target GC Giveaway!

Well, hello! Boy (or most likely "Girl"), do I have a treat for you today. In celebration of a new year and a new look here at Mrs. K and Captain J, I thought I'd get some fun giveaways going for the month of January. First up in the goodie bag, is a Target GC from the cute and hysterical, Kristin! I'll let her introduce herself if you aren't familiar with her blog...

Hey there.

I'm Kristin.
Kristin’s kNook

I did a guest post for Mrs. K once before and I talked about Alaska.  I don't really want to talk about that anymore.

I DO want to mention the fact that she threw out the invitation of "Would anyone like to do a giveaway for me?" and I said yes because I like her.  And I respect her as a blogger.  Which is almost as important as liking her :)

So for this reason, I didn't mind adding one more thing to my to-do list and stopping by Target for a gift card.  (My to-do list is ridiculous, as I am inherently lazy.)

Um, plus, who can resist a trip to Target?  I live approximately 5 minutes from Target.  I'm there 3 times a week.  We went on a 2 week vacation in December and I swear I went through a withdrawal.  It goes without saying that I was back in there (on Christmas Eve, no less) pawing through the clearance racks as soon as I had a chance.

If you stop by my blog, you will see:

(in no particular order)

1. Desserts
2. My attempts at taking pictures of myself while wearing passable outfits on my cold, windy deck
3. Funny stuff I see on the internet and in real life
4. My workouts
5. Complaints about Alaska

(I know.  Mrs. K loooooved it here.  We'll see if I can bring you over to my pessimistic side of things.)

Thanks for reading and good luck with the giveaway!

Copy Kids

Moms of small, picky eaters will want to read this post!

If you've been reading long enough, you know I'm a bit of a psychology nerd. I majored in Psych as an undergrad and quickly fell in love with learning because everything was so interesting. Forget practical application, I just thought it was a heck of a lot better than going to math and physical science classes for that other degree I wanted once upon a time. Anyway, as I got older and progressed through the program, I started conducting my own research. I started to believe that there really was something to this- the way humans react and learn.

I remember the famous study by Bandura in which he used Bobo dolls to study patterns of aggression and social learning. Look it up if you have no idea what I'm talking about- it's interesting! In it, he found that children do tend to model behaviors based on what they've seen by other children and adults. In addition, many other research projects focus on the influence that media can have on our attitudes. I've always been intrigued by this and one of my own experimental research projects focused on this very thing.

Still, if you had asked me a week ago if I could teach my one year old to eat a larger variety of foods by simply letting him watch a DVD, I'd have said, "Probably not."

Enter Copy-Kids Media.

I was contacted to review a DVD by fellow mom Cai Dixon. She noticed that her daughter was more likely to eat fruits and veggies if she saw other children doing the same. This revelation came to fruition in a DVD where toddlers are enjoying eating various foods.

Baby K is a little fussy about his foods. He gets in a routine and wants to stick with that in every aspect of his little life. Handing him new food usually results in a toss to the floor. And that's exactly what he did when I handed him an avocado shortly before viewing the DVD.

I cut the avocado in half and placed it on his tray. He isn't a huge fan of avocado. He readily ate it when mixed with a banana, though. Always, always it was pureed. I wasn't very hopeful, but I stuck the DVD in our computer and suddenly he was transfixed to the screen in awe of the other tiny human who was eating an avocado like a champ! Within a minute of watching, Baby K was doing the same. I couldn't believe it.

Could.not.believe. it.

I thought it was likely a fluke so next I switched it to the tomato section of the DVD. K has never had a tomato before but after watching the other kids enjoy it, he did too.

I am so pleased with this DVD. I can't wait to try the other foods listed which are: bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, oranges, bananas, raspberries, strawberries, apples, and blueberries.

The DVD has won numerous awards and was approved by the USDA and added to their Education and Training Materials Database for pre-school nutrition!

Cai Dixon has generously offered up another copy of the DVD for one lucky reader. Please use the Rafflecopter form below to enter for your chance to win!

Adios (and a winner announced!)

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson

Remember this little beach bum?

The little one, not the big one...
Well, he's at it again. Baby K and I are off to Mississippi today sans daddy. We're awfully sad to leave him behind, but the trip is very brief so we'll surely make it without him for a day or two.
We're driving to the coast to see "Pap" and "JuJu", K's grandparents. Here's to hoping there's a lovely, sunshiny beach or pool day in our near future.
I miss the Cap'n already...
Love,

P.S.- Two winners have been chosen! Congrats to Kris at The New Normal for being the lucky recipient of the Target GC. Also, Rhe Christine at Cammo Style Love will be receiving the PayPal gift. Thanks to all who entered!

Fun at Target- that's what! Enter to win a $10 GC!

But that's not all....

Another winner will be the lucky recipient of a $10 PayPal gift.

This is just my small thank you for checking in with me throughout the week. I enjoy the connections I've made here and want to keep them coming! They keep this ole knocked up housewife with something to do during the day aside from diaper washing, dishes, and dusting. For that, I thank you!

2 winners will be chosen from the Rafflecopter form below. This giveaway ends July 21st EST.

Good luck, party people.

Amazon GC Giveaway

I've been hinting around lately that today is a good day to visit MrsKandCaptainJ.net, but I didn't tell you exactly what the prize is:

You've got a chance to win $100.00 with an Amazon gift code. Awesome! Who doesn't love Amazon? The best part is that there will be 3 winners! That makes the total for this giveaway worth $300! Fun stuff.

What would I buy with $100.00 worth of Amazon moolah? I'd probably buy Mr. K Baby some stuff for our upcoming beach trip. Perhaps a floaty toy or some more swimwear. Sometimes I like to browse the Recommendations section but it's full of baby stuff, adventure books, and coffee- None of which are really up my alley at the time being! One hundred whole dollars I could spend on myself? I have no idea what I would buy!

I digress. Good luck to you, fine folks. Contest ends June 18th.
3 Random Winners will each score a $100 Amazon Gift Code

Cloth Diaper Giveaway- Baby Babu

Something awesome happened to me this week. I had ordered a couple diapers from Baby Babu and I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of the package. Baby K has out-grown some of his fitteds so I ordered some more one sizes to replenish his stash (and start getting Baby #2's diapers ready to go!). I discovered Baby Babu a couple weeks ago by reading another blog and I wanted to try them out because their diapers are SO affordable.

My shipment arrived feeling a little more hefty than I imagined it would. I tore into it to find not only the two diapers I ordered, but three extras. Score! I knew I couldn't keep them, though so I contacted the company via their Facebook page and received a call shortly after. The company was incredibly kind and said it was their mistake and that I COULD KEEP THEM! I was so happy. Baby K doesn't have many diapers so I was washing almost every day- their kindness gave me a little wiggle room. To give back, I thought I'd offer one of these bonus diapers to you.

How about a giveaway?! Here's what is up for grabs:

One Size Pocket Diaper + insert (THIS GUY'S BANANAS- MONKEY)

I love this diaper. How cute is it?

Not only is it cute, but it has some pretty cool features, too. There are TWO openings for stuffing inside the diaper. It's designed to work its way out of the diaper in the wash so you don't have to reach in before hand to take it out--saving you more time (and maybe your lunch)! This diaper also uses snaps that can help fit your baby from 8-35+ lbs. The diaper wings have three snaps for a better fit. It also comes with one super absorbant insert.

Would you like to be the proud new owner? Follow the directions on the Rafflecopter form below. Thanks for entering and as always, thanks for reading!

If you don't want to wait for the giveaway to order, go to their website and start shopping! Like them on Facebook for special discount codes.

(Note: Baby Babu did not ask me to write a positive review or prompt me with this giveaway.)

SocialPunk

When I was initially approached to review this book, I thought- I probably won't like it. But, the writer, who I've received dozens of emails from is a good writer. I could tell by the way she made me want to keep reading the lengthy emails. I was impressed by her, but still I was unsure of her newly released book, SocialPunk. I was wrong to so quickly judge. This book is the first of a trilogy and I can't wait for the others to be released!

Monica Leonelle's first in the SocialPunk trilogy is described on her blog:

Ima would give anything to escape The Dome and learn what’s beyond its barriers, but the Chicago government has kept all its citizens on lockdown ever since the Scorched Years left most of the world a desert wasteland. When a mysterious group of hooded figures enters the city unexpectedly, Ima uncovers a plot to destroy The Dome and is given the choice between escaping to a new, dangerous city or staying behind and fighting a battle she can never win.
It sounds too futuristic for my tastes, but I couldn't put the book down. I downloaded it to my kindle and it was read by the time my flight arrived in Tennessee a few weekends ago. I loved it! The book is fairly short and it keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. The twists and turns the story took were often unexpected and the ending of book one was one that I didn't see coming! I enjoy when an author surprises me like that, don't you?

Another awesome perk of reading the book is that she's hosting a huge giveaway! The prizes are awesome and include a new iPad 3, a Kindle Fire, and autographed copies of the book. The giveaway ends on April 30 so if you don't have time, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ THE BOOK TO ENTER! There are other ways to participate, too. See the Rafflecopter below.

How To Get Anything You Want

The title of the book is just attractive, isn't it?

How To Get Anything You Want Just Like That!

I don't know anyone who doesn't want to know that little gem of info. We're all searching for something, right? Needless to say, I thought I would really like this book. My background is in the helping professions and I assumed that I would find Janet Poole's book useful and relatable. If I'm being honest, there are several excellent points in it. There were multiple times when I was scribbling in my notebook thinking, "Oh, that's good!" or "Yes. That is absolutely important to remember." The flip side of the coin, though is one that is not so relatable for me. For instance, the very first sentence starts off, "Did you know that you are entitled to have anything you want?" Perhaps this set the tone for the rest of the book for me since I completely disagree with everything about that sentence.

There were other things about this way of thinking that irked me, too. The author describes that each of us are gods (p. 7), a belief that is fundamentally against what I, as a Christian, believe. Poole discusses past lives and freely dishes out lots of feel good advice and tools toward getting what one wants out of the present life.

What did I like about the book? It's food for thought. No matter what you believe, it's important to know why you believe that. It's important to step outside of your box and expand your mind. One of my favorite quotes says:

"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." - Aristotle

With that being said, the book also contains several key concepts that I wholeheartedly believe to be true. There's an emphasis on making changes in thinking in order to create change in life. This is absolutely something that I've found to be true in my life and in the lives of people I've worked with in a counseling setting. There's also an emphasis on loving and valuing the self which is important for self growth, in my opinion.

In addition to these pearls of wisdom, there are also summaries and exercises to accompany each chapter.

Want a copy? The first person to comment on this post will get their very own! And maybe the second person, too ;) Facebook comments will not count- it must be a blog comment.

(Note: I was provided this book as well as compensated for this review. All opinions are my own and may differ from yours.)

TTC Kit Winner Announced!

I'm so happy to report that Random.org has found a winner for the ConceiveEasy Kit.

The 5th comment was -
After struggling for 3 years to get pregnant with Rylie including one loss along the way, I think I could write a book on all the tricks and treatmegnts I tried along with the emotional rollercoaster you can’t seem to stop. It’s nice to be able to read something that is real and not just a “we thought about it and I got pregnant “story. Thanks for sharing. Infertility can make you feel like you’re the only one because it’s a taboo subject. This kit sounds great and it comes at a perfect time since we are ready to start on baby #2:) It would be great to win, but I will probably try this kit regardless.

Congrats, Rachel Trundle! Message me on facebook or email me with which kit option you want (1,2, or 3) and your shipping address and we'll get it sent to ya.

Thanks for entering all! I wish you all could win.

Trying To Conceive (TTC)?

I never really wrote much about our experiences in trying to get pregnant with Baby #1 who as you know is now lovingly referred to as sweet Baby K! But we didn't just get pregnant exactly when we wanted to. After thinking I was pregnant only to be upset when we found out that I wasn't, Captain J and I realized we wanted to start a family. We wanted little K so very much. We prayed about it. We stopped preventing it and we waited. And we waited.

Every month (or mulitple times a month) when I tested to see if we were expecting, my heart dropped a bit, wondering why it wasn't happening for us. But that's not what this post is about.

My point is- those pregnancy tests and all those ovulation tests can get pricey, can't they? If you're like I was, you have the obsessive need to just know.

I was delighted to see the ConceiveEasy TTC Kit online. Although, we aren't currently actively trying to get pregnant right now, I knew it would come in handy for the future. ConceiveEasy is a natural ingredient supplement designed to enhance the body's fertility by stimulating ovulation. The kit comes with all you'll need for Months 1 & 2. Inside my kit, there were also 10 pregnancy tests and 10 ovulation tests. Both sets of tests were easy to read. And guess what?

They work! As you can see, I'm not pregnant. The only thing I noticed that might be a downside to the pregnancy test is that the result reading could be confused. A "negative" result looks like the "invalid" result depending upon which way you're holding the test in your hand. It's not difficult to figure out, though. You're smart. I know you can do it. ;) I mean, I did! Really, though...everything is user friendly.

The makers of this kit claim your fertility rate can be increased in just 28 days. Users of ConceiveEasy experienced a 33% rise in pregnancy rates! That's encouraging. When you're in the beginning stages of trying to conceive after noticing it's not always as easy as it may seem, you'll try almost anything, right? I remember positioning myself in bed with my legs propped up (ha). I remember reading book after book on fertility practices. Too bad I didn't know about this product before! Anyway, I'm going to tuck this little jewel in my medicine cabinet
for a rainy day
for next time we decide we want to add to our family. I think it will be useful for me.

Click here to view a success story! Just warms my heart :) I know that infertility issues are very delicate to discuss and deal with. I caught a small glimpse of that in the many months it took for us to get pregnant with Baby K. When I was approached to host a giveaway for FertiBella, I was anxious to do so. Extra pregnancy and ovulation tests can't hurt, can they?

Do you want one? I'm giving one kit away. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post letting me know you're interested and I'll throw your name in a hat (read: I'll add your comment number to random.org). This giveaway ends on January 12, 2012 so comment soon! The winner will receive a starter package with the choice of one of the following:

  • Bonus gift #1: 20 Early Result Pregnancy Tests

  • Bonus gift #2: 20 One-Step Ovulation Tests

  • Bonus gift #3: 10 Pregnancy & 10 Ovulation Tests

(Note: I received compensation and samples for completing this review and giveaway. That being said, I do not post opinions that are not my own. I have used parts of the above mentioned product and all opinions are my own and may differ from yours.)

a reminder

I had a mini anxiety attack last night and this morning. When a girl who knows nothing about html, designing a website, inserting plug-ins, exports and imports, et cetera, et cetera attempts to move two years worth of her life writing over to a whole new blogging platform and take the domain she's already purchased with her, it's not a pretty site sight. It may not look like it, but somehow I accomplished this all by myself. You'll notice a lot of your old familiar features with this new layout. And I think you can access all my old posts (that was the whole point anyway!). But some of you who had been subscribing via email might have to follow in some other way. I'm still trying to work those kinks out. If you were notified via email about THIS post, will you leave a comment telling me all is fine and dandy and working properly?

'preciate it.

Mrs. K and Captain J is back! (Probably before any of you knew it had left ;) )

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and remind you that today is the last day to enter my giveaway in celebration of my two years of blogging here...uh, there? Well, whatever. Go enter while you still can!

The winner will be announced tomorrow.

XOXO,

Mrs. K
